Jonathan Rhys Meyers Talks about Dracula: The Man, The Vampire, and his Bloody Revenge

Yesterday, Yahoo! posted a video of Jonathan Rhys Meyers talking about the show. In it he discussed Dracula’s motivation, his relationship with the Order of the Dragon, and the differences between the NBC/Sky adaptation and Bram Stoker’s novel. He also goes into the myth versus the man:

“Dracula doesn’t exist,” he says. “Dracula is the monster. Vlad Tepes and Alexander Grayson exist; Vlad Tepes is the core character, Alexander Grayson is the facade he’s using for the world of commerce, Dracula is the monster.”

“I think revenge, pain, love and loss are universal themes,” he continues. “I think using beautiful sets and putting people out of their time-comfort zone is a way of allowing them to embrace the fantastic-ness of what is happening. The brutality, but also the beauty. It’s easier to digest in a historical setting.”
